Direct debit processing times

We withdraw the direct debit amount from your bank account when we receive a request to take the direct debit from the initiator, for example, your power company or gym. As we process payments seven days a week, your payment may come out on a weekend or public holiday.

Direct debits are controlled by the person or company that set up the payment, so check with the person or company you pay. Ask what they do if the usual payment date falls on a weekend or public holiday – either:

• Continue taking direct debits on the next business day, or
• Start taking direct debits on non-business days.

Don’t have enough money for a direct debit payment at the processing time?

We’ll keep trying to make the direct debit payment throughout the day up until midnight. If you still don’t have enough money in your account by midnight, then we can:

• dishonour (not pay) the direct debit, or
• make the direct debit payment anyway, lending you money you don’t have which may overdraw your account – interest and fees may apply.
